Format and timing

The HUMAT is 60 scored questions in three timed sections, followed by six reserve questions: 132 minutes in all, sat online from home and in English.

Three sections, then the reserve.

Each section has its own clock, and the sections run in a fixed order. The questions are in English, and each has five options, of which exactly one is correct.

Each section closes for good.

A section ends when its time runs out or when you select “End section”. You may move on early, but the time you leave unused is lost, and once a section has closed you cannot return to it or change its answers.

Inside a section.

  • Move between the questions of the open section with the question grid or the previous and next buttons.
  • Select an option and choose “Confirm and continue”. A confirmed question turns green in the grid, and you can still change it while the section is open.
  • Tick “To review” to flag a question. It turns yellow with a question mark; when the section closes, a flagged answer counts as given.
  • Choose “I omit the answer” to leave a question unanswered. It scores zero, the same as a blank.

The reserve questions.

After the third section come six reserve questions, one in each subject, with 12 minutes to answer them. They count only if a scored question is withdrawn: the reserve question in the same subject then takes its place. Otherwise they play no part in the ranking.
